How Water Batteries Work

Release and Electricity Generation: During periods of high demand or when the grid requires additional power, water is released from the upper reservoir to the lower one. This flow of water turns a turbine, generating electricity. A reversible turbine facilitates the movement of water between reservoirs.

Project Details and Benefits

Location and Capacity: The “Hollow Mountain” of Cruachan Power Station will host the 600-megawatt plant. This scenic area with a history of hydropower will see its power capacity exceed a gigawatt with this project, equivalent to about 1.3 million horses’ power.

Efficiency and Readiness: Water batteries are known for their efficiency, operating at around 70-80%. They are ready to provide power during high-demand periods, such as heatwaves, contributing to grid stability.

Future Plans and Clean Energy Goals

Project Timeline: While the project’s market details are being worked out, the aim is to have the water battery project operational by 2030. This endeavor is expected to employ nearly 1,000 individuals and contribute to cleaner power for Scotland and neighboring areas.
